Ontonagon County hosts a significant trail network for both motorized and non-motorized recreation. The Pioneer Multi-Use State Trail Number 13 is about 3+ miles to the north west. The North Country Scenic Trail (NCST), used for hiking, runs west to east through the central part of the county, including the Porcupine Mountains State Park. The Bergland to Sidnaw Rail Trail Number 8 runs along M-28 just two miles to the south. The nearest unincorporated community of Matchwood is on M-28 about 2 miles to the south. It was named for the Diamond Match Company, which owned most of the pine forest in the area. The Company established their headquarters here in 1893 to accommodate and supply their numerous logging camps in the area.
